Turn to Spin, Return to Spin Again.

The day finds me with my two large monitors staring me down with the hate of cursed children playing a hand of Magic the gathering with nothing but Ornithopters.  Yes, with the nudging of a friend… I’ve played that game… once.

Two drawings both alike in quality stare at me through my glaring over sized monitors with large dimensions and small instructions informing me of the next event clamoring for my attention.

Before that show however I do indeed have another project that has clearly tiptoed its way from a 4 month old discussion to a hurried Tech this Monday.  It’s that time of year again where I have the thrill of being the LD for the 24hr plays on Broadway!  While I do still believe it is for a fantastic cause, I also still think that I only just did it recently!!  They sneak up so fast on you!  Perhaps this time will be a little easier and not involve certain Directors thinking I have been born to personally punch them in the feelings with my constrained lack of choices in my 20 minutes of tech per show.  We shall see.  I am however looking forward to finally meeting Sarah Silverman.  With any luck she will first meet me and fall in love then scorn me with a look and that chapter of my life will nearly be complete (all within 1.3 minutes)…  I still await the day I meet Janeane Garofalo.  I’m not a sadist… but I can’t think of anything better than being befuddled by that brilliant Woman.

Since the last update I found a moment of time to head to Austin Texas!  Yes… that fantastic little town I grew up in and that once long ago introduced me to my current talent and means of paying the bills. (Thank you Jason A for rescuing me from SM and Audio jobs all those years ago… not that I don’t like them… but well….. I don’t like them as much.)

Yes, for those who know her… The ineffable Lara Toner has now been married!!!  Very exciting.  I should add that her new husband is such a perfect fit for her that the fresh baked cookies from Martha’s bosom could offer no more pure honest joy in my world.  After the ceremony I walked up to a fellow artist and said “that was beautiful.. i got a little weepy!”  to which he replied… “well… you’ve always been a pussy.”…  Thank you David Jones… Gotta love that guy.

While in Austin I met up with my favorite restaurants.  I then began a fantastic journey of eating poorly… with every breakfast taco i heard my doctor after telling me to be more healthy say the deafening words “look… this is for YOU you know…”.  mmmmmm…. Juan in a Million… yes it IS for me…

I was able to meet up with my writing buddies who have been and will continue to be a large part of my life.  One of the evenings found me excited about getting into another fist fight, seeing a friend land some more ink without telling his wife, running into a good friend from NYC of all places and celebrating his birthday (Alex Hawthorn you beast), watching Korean BBQ taco continue to serve as people stepped over the drunken bleeding man while trying not to loose a place in the line as the ambulance arrived, and the Hot red circular light of joy shining its way to a krispy kreme.

At some point I was asked to talk to some students at St. Edwards University about Lighting Design and Working Professionally in NYC.  I of course being madly in love with St. Edwards happily agreed!  Mostly I found my self talking about the importance of Art and working in your own community while not loosing site of ones goals.  That and how if your going into the field of NYC Theater… give up on that whole “time for yourself” thing.

In my visit to Austin I was of course able to spend some time with family as well as friends.  For my friends, I wasn’t able to see everyone I knew there as the trip afforded me very little time, however, I am grateful for the time people were able to loan to me.

Upon my return I found a Bizzarro taxi driver who kept telling me “only for you my friend!”, my Last house guest Vanished with a wonderful note, Winchester giving me the gift of a freshly painted bathroom and many many notes about too many projects on the lit side of the horizon.

I’ve been asked to deliver 3 new paintings from the trip as well… this … this will prove difficult as some of you know.     Ah Time… that one elusive demon that steals as much as it gives.
